Rotary Club of Bombay runs the Mumbai Marathon

For the first time the Rotary participated in the Mumbai Marathon registering itself as a Charitable N.G.O. with 28 participants out of which 16 participants were Rotarians/R/anns & 9 Non-Rotarians (friends of Rotarians). Out of these three participants ran the Half Marathon - our own star performer Rtn. Alok Sekhsaria, Mr. Ashish Barwale & Mr. Rajesh Pai.

It was a proud moment to watch all run under the Rotary Club of Bombay banner lead by our President Nandan Damani. The event was organized jointly by the Fellowship Committee, Education for All Committee (Bhavishya-yaan) and Talwada Committee.

This is what our own Rtn. Arin Master who very enthusiastically participated along with spouse Percy Master and 4 friends had to say about the event :-

We all gathered in the proximity of Gate No.1 Azad Maidan as directed by Madhusudan. We were all ready and raring to go by 8.30 am.  With the enthusiasm of Nirav who made us all pose for photographs, we were informed to proceed to the holding bay for entry to the dream run.  With several groups heading in the same direction, more than 20,000 were headed for gates A, B & C.  Smartly we followed the Standard Chartered group who were the main sponsors and on the dot of 9:10 we were on the road for the dream run.

Holding our Rotary Club of Bombay Banner high for all to see, we marched past the podium at VT, where many celebrities including our Rotarian The Sheriff of Bombay Indu Sahanu waved us thru. With a carnival like atmosphere and various TV stations recording our progress, we proceeded towards Fountain on the 1st leg of the dream run.  Being encouraged by the cheering spectators, radio jockeys of various stations who were broadcasting live, we marched to Marine Drive.  It was great fun to talk to various people representing different NGO's & highlighting their commitments to various social causes.  The young and old citizens of Mumbai showed their enthusiasm and commitment to the world to various social causes.

Approaching Trident Hotel for the turnaround, we were pleasantly surprised to see the staff and guests of Trident come out on the streets to cheer the participants.  Huge enthusiastic crowds greeted and encouraged us all along Marine Drive as we approached the Princess Street flyover.  The Naval band treated us to some lively music.  By this time fatigue had set in most participants and the climb over the Fly Over was crowded and slow.  Coming down the Fly Over we were on the final lap of the dream run.  It was a great relief and a sense of commitment completed for all participants as we ended our dream run at gate no.3 of Azad Maidan.  All in all it was a great carnival atmosphere, full of fun and frolic. We look forward to the next marathon to make it a bigger success.

Our thanks to the sponsors and organisers of the largest Mumbai Marathon in Asia.
